About wool rugs
Why wool rugs feel like home
Plush underfoot, and warm all winter.
Having wool rugs in your home is a great investment. Wool rugs are known for their plush texture that feels nice to touch and brings warmth. Wool rugs are especially great to have, to cushion against hard floors. Their insulating qualities guard against the cold and excess noise. Wool rugs are frequently seen in living rooms and areas where people spend lots of time together.
Many professional businesses use wool rugs in their offices and store fronts. Wool rugs make a great impression with their unique patterns and textures. These rugs dress up any location with added luxury and warmth. With a plush wool rug underfoot, clients are drawn to the comfort and luxury it brings.
Rugs made of wool material come in many designs. Chinese wool rugs use a light colour palette and frequently use Buddhist and Taoist motifs. Oriental rugs commonly come from places such as Asia, Iran, China, India and Tibet. These wool rugs use a rich, dark colour palette and rectilinear patterns for their rug patterns. Persian rugs use floral themes and curvilinear patterns.

Common problems
Wool holds on to dirt
More than a vacuum can lift.
Wool fibres are thick and springy, which is why they feel so good. It also means sand, dust, hair and pet fur work their way down and settle at the base of the rug.
Over time the rug looks flat and dull, especially along the paths people walk. A thorough wash reaches what weekly vacuuming leaves behind.
- Dull, flat traffic paths
- Pet hair in the pile
- Spills and smells
- Moths under furniture

How we clean it
A thorough wash, with care for the wool
Deep enough to reach the base, gentle on the fibres.
Wool cleans up well when it’s treated with care. Too much heat, harsh products or rough scrubbing can damage it, so we keep things gentle and thorough.
- Check We look at the wool, the dyes, the backing and the fringe, and note any stains or worn spots.
- Wash A full wash that reaches the dirt at the base of the pile, then a good rinse.
- Dry Wool holds a lot of water, so it dries indoors, without high heat, until it’s dry all the way through.
- Fringe Washed with the rug, so it matches the clean pile. It also gets extra treatment after drying.

Wool, pets and moths
Care between washes
A few habits that keep wool looking good.
Wool is forgiving, but a little care goes a long way. Pet hair, spills and quiet, dark corners are the things to watch.
- Vacuum often, and now and then lift a corner and vacuum underneath too.
- Blot pet accidents and spills right away with a clean cloth or white paper towels, without rubbing.
- Every few months, move the furniture and look underneath. Moths like dark spots that nobody walks on.

Questions
Wool rug questions
The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.
How often should a wool rug be cleaned?
As a rough guide, about once a year for a rug in an everyday room. Rugs in busy hallways, or in homes with pets and young children, may need it more often.
How much does wool rug cleaning cost?
Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate.
Can a wool rug be washed with water?
Yes, when it’s done with care. We inspect the rug and its backing first, wash gently and make sure the rug is dry all the way through before it comes home.
Will my wool rug shrink?
Careful washing and even drying lower the risk. We look at how your rug is made before we start, and if we see a reason for concern, we tell you first.
Do moths really damage wool rugs?
They can. Moth larvae feed on wool, often in dark corners or under furniture where the rug isn’t walked on. If you see bare patches or tiny cases in the pile, ask us about moth treatment and moth damage repair.
