Where smells come from

Why a rug starts to smell

A rug holds onto whatever lands in it.

Unpleasant smells decrease the quality of your living space. They can be acquired from a number of organic and synthetic sources. Common smells are from smoke, cooking smells, dust, pet smells, harsh cleaning solutions, old carpet material, fragrances, perfumes, cologne and even chemicals in new carpet. Some odours may be from a previous tenant in an apartment.

  • Pet accidents
  • Damp and mildew
  • Spills gone sour
  • Long storage

A rug soaks up smells from daily life. Over time, what’s trapped in the pile and the base starts to smell, even when the rug still looks clean.

What we do

Washed out, not covered up

Air fresheners only add a second smell.

If left unaddressed, rug odours can cause discomfort. You want quality for your home and living environment. Having your rugs deodorized is an important component to bringing comfort to your home.

Some people try to mask odours with air fresheners, but this doesn’t properly deal with the odour issue. The odour is still there together with the air freshener fragrance. Deodorizing rugs aims at the source of the odour.

  • Find We look for where the smell is coming from, front and back.
  • Wash The whole rug is washed at our facility, the way its fibres need.
  • Treat Where a smell comes from deep inside, such as urine, that area can get enzyme odour treatment.
  • Dry A rug that stays damp smells musty, so we dry it fully before it comes home.

Enzyme odour treatment is an extra step. You’ll know the price before we start.

Living with pets

Accidents aren’t the only cause.

Pet urine is one of the most common causes of a smelly rug. Even after the mark has gone, what’s left in the fibres can bring the smell back on humid days.

Pets that nap on a rug also leave oils, hair and dander that build up over time. A regular wash keeps on top of it.

At home

Keeping your home fresh

Small habits help between cleanings.

Here are some additional ways to manage odours at home.

  • You can manage odours by investing in a good air filter. This removes airborne particles before they settle into your carpet.
  • Having a quality fume hood in the kitchen will prevent cooking smells from traveling to the rest of the home. You may also want to close room doors to prevent the cooking smells from entering your rooms.
  • Airing out your home space helps ventilate your living environment, and it helps get rid of unwanted smells.
  • Vacuum often, and deal with spills and accidents quickly.

Questions

Odour removal questions

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.

Will the smell be completely gone?

That’s what our enzyme odour treatment is for, on any type of rug, whatever the smell, and it comes with our odour promise*. Old urine can also leave a yellow mark. That’s a stain rather than a smell, and a job for stain treatment.

Can you remove a smoke smell?

Smoke clings to wool and other fibres. A full wash is the best place to start, and we’ll tell you honestly what to expect for your rug. If you choose our enzyme odour treatment, our odour promise* covers smoke too.

My rug got wet and smells musty. What should I do?

Lift it off the wet floor and let air reach both sides, then call us. A rug that stays wet can grow mildew, which can damage it. See rug sanitizing for more.

Do you just cover smells up?

No. When we deodorize a rug, we go after the source of the odour instead of covering it with another scent.

How much does odour removal cost?

Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Enzyme odour treatment is an extra step, priced by what your rug needs. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free.
