When it helps
When a rug needs sanitizing
A sour smell is often the first sign.
Common pests such as bacteria feed on organic materials. As the bacteria colony grows and consumes food, odours are produced as a waste by-product. Bacteria become present when there is organic material in the rug. Common organic particles come from food, shed skin, fur, hair, sweat and other bodily fluids.
Bacteria aren’t visible to the eye, but they do leave signs of their presence. The main indicator that you have bacteria in your rug is that the rug has a sour smell to it. Bacteria can cause discolouration and shading to rug material as well.
- Pet accidents
- A leak or flood
- A musty smell
- A second-hand rug
If any of these sound familiar, ask us about adding sanitizing to your rug’s clean.

What we do
Washed first, then sanitized
One careful process at our facility.
We look over your rug and wash it the way its fibres need. If you’ve asked for sanitizing, we add it as an extra step after the wash. For sanitizing we use Benefect, a solution with botanical thyme oil as the main active ingredient.
- Wash The whole rug is washed first.
- Sanitize An extra treatment after the wash, priced before we start.
- Dry A rug that stays damp is where smells and mildew start, so we dry it fully.
Ask us about Benefect, and we’ll explain it in plain words.

Water damage
After a leak or flood
Act quickly, and let it dry.
Another common pest is mould. This grows where there is an organic food source and the conditions are damp. If a rug stays wet, mould can stain it, make it smell and weaken the fibres and backing.
Lift the rug off the wet floor, let air reach both sides, and call us at (416) 939-7571. The sooner we see it, the more we can usually do.
If a rug has been wet for too long, it may not be worth cleaning. We’ll tell you honestly.

Older rugs
Second-hand, inherited and stored rugs
Clean it before it goes down.
A rug from a family home, a vintage shop or years in storage can carry dust and smells. A full clean, with sanitizing if you’d like it, gives it a fresh start in your home.
Stored wool rugs are worth checking for moths too.

Questions
Rug sanitizing questions
The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.
Is sanitizing the same as cleaning?
No. Cleaning washes out dirt, dust and spills. Sanitizing is an extra treatment added after the wash, for rugs that need it.
Will it make my rug germ-free?
No treatment can keep a rug germ-free once it’s back on the floor. Sanitizing is a fresh start after accidents, leaks or a musty smell.
Can you clean a rug with mould on it?
It depends how far it has gone. Mould can damage a rug’s fibres and backing. We’ll look at it and tell you honestly whether cleaning makes sense.
How much does sanitizing cost?
Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug, and sanitizing is an extra step on top. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free.
