About Oriental rugs
What makes an Oriental rug special
Many places, many traditions, one careful craft.
Oriental rugs can come from several locations, such as Nepal, India, Pakistan, areas of Asia, Iran, Turkey, Tibet, China and Russia.
These rugs have a distinctive symmetric design with geometric or rectilinear shapes. These rug design features make Oriental rugs a great choice for arranging furniture pieces in a room. Oriental rugs also commonly use floral shapes and themes.
These rugs are captivating because of their detailed patterns and use of colour. Oriental rugs dress up a room and bring elegance as well. This classic design can be chosen to keep a room from being boring. Vivid Cleaning takes care in cleaning Oriental rugs to preserve their fantastic floral designs.

Turkish & Oushak rugs
Turkish and Oushak rug cleaning
Wool pile, in bold or soft colours.
Turkish rugs are often woven in wool, with strong reds, blues and geometric borders. Oushak rugs, named after the city of Uşak in western Turkey, are loved for their softer colours and large, open patterns.
Soft, pale colours show dirt and traffic marks quickly, and strong reds need care so they stay where they belong. We inspect each rug at our facility, and if we think the colours might run, we tell you before we go ahead. Then we choose a gentle wash for the wool.

Kilim & flat-weave rugs
Kilim and flat‑weave rug cleaning
Woven flat, with no pile.
A kilim is woven rather than knotted, so it has no pile at all. The pattern is made by the coloured threads themselves, which is why many kilims look almost the same on both sides.
Flat-weaves are light and easy to move, but they don’t hide dirt or spills the way a thick rug can. Their colours can be bright and strong, so we check them before washing and dry the rug flat and even.
Dhurries and other cotton flat-weaves are on our cotton rug page.

How we clean it
Checked first, then washed with care
Wool, silk or cotton: the fibres decide the method.
Oriental rugs are often hand-knotted during fabrication. Oriental rugs can be made from a variety of materials, such as wool, silk or cotton. Many are a mix, so we start by finding out what yours is made of.
- Check Fibres, dyes, fringe and any worn spots, looked at closely first.
- Wash A wash at our facility suited to the fibres, deep enough to reach the dirt at the base.
- Dry Dried indoors without high heat, evenly and all the way through, so it keeps its shape.
- Fringe Washed with the rug, and checked for any loose or worn ends. It also gets extra treatment after drying.

Between cleanings
Simple care at home
A few habits keep your rug looking good.
- Vacuum your rug two or three times each week to remove most dust and dirt.
- Clean up liquid spills immediately with clean paper towels. This helps prevent rug dye from bleeding. Blot, don’t rub.
- Turn the rug now and then so it wears and fades evenly.
Extra care
Stains, odours and repairs
Some rugs need more than a wash. We price any extra work before we start.
Rug types
Other rugs we clean
Every rug is made differently. We check each one before we wash it.

Persian
Rich reds and blues, fine knots. Washed gently, fringe and all.

Synthetic & outdoor
Nylon, polyester and patio rugs, washed free of everyday grime.

Silk
Fine and delicate, with a natural sheen. Our most gentle handling.

Wool
Warm and hard-wearing. Wool holds dirt deep, so it gets a thorough wash.
Not sure what your rug is? That’s fine. We check every rug before we clean it.
Questions
Oriental rug questions
The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.
What’s the difference between Persian and Oriental rugs?
Persian rugs are one kind of Oriental rug, made in Iran and the areas around it. “Oriental” covers hand-made rugs from many other places too. Read more about Persian rugs.
How much does Oriental rug cleaning cost?
Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate.
Can you clean a kilim or other flat-weave?
Yes. Kilims and flat-weaves have no pile, so they’re washed and dried with care to keep them flat and even. We check the colours first, as they can be bright and strong.
My Oriental rug has silk in it. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but it changes how we wash it. Silk needs our gentlest handling, so we check the fibres first. See silk rug cleaning.
What should I do if I spill something on it?
Blot it right away with a clean cloth or white paper towels, working from the outside in. Don’t rub or scrub, which can spread the spill and push it deeper. If a mark stays, give us a call.
