How we care for them

Gentle care for fine hand‑made rugs

Hand-made rugs don’t like rough treatment. Here is how we look after yours, from the first look to the trip home.

A close look first

Checked before it gets wet

What your rug is made of decides how we wash it.

We turn the corners over to see how your rug was made. We look at the pile and the threads underneath, and at how well the dyes have held up.

We also note stains, thin spots, moth damage, loose fringe and old repairs, so nothing comes as a surprise later.

  • Knots and weave
  • Wool, silk or cotton
  • Dyes and colours
  • Fringe and edges

If something needs extra care, we tell you plainly before we start. If you decide not to go ahead after the inspection, we bring your rug back at no charge.

Washing

Washed for its fibres and its dyes

No single recipe suits every hand-made rug.

Most Persian and Oriental rugs have a wool pile, often on a cotton base, and some have silk. We wash right through to the grit at the base of the pile, gently and without hard scrubbing.

  • Wool A thorough but gentle wash that reaches the dirt deep in the pile.
  • Silk Our gentlest handling, with extra care for the sheen.
  • Cotton Bases and flat-weaves, washed so the colours don’t spread.
  • Dyes Strong reds and older dyes are looked at closely before the wash.

Drying and the fringe

Dried slowly, fringe and all

The last steps matter as much as the wash.

A thick wool rug holds a lot of water. We take the water out, then let your rug dry indoors without high heat, evenly and all the way through, so it keeps its shape.

The fringe is washed with the rug, so it doesn’t stay grey beside clean colours. It also gets extra treatment after drying. If it’s loose or worn, we’ll show you before we do anything about it.

When to wash

When a fine rug needs a wash

Dirt hides well in a busy pattern.

Grit settles at the base of the pile, where you can’t see it, and wears at the wool each time someone walks across. A few signs tell you it’s time.

  • Colours look flat
  • Grey, tired fringe
  • Grit in a folded corner
  • Spills or pet accidents

Extra care

Stains, moths and repairs

Some rugs need more than a wash. We price any extra work before we start.

Stain treatment

Wine, coffee and food spills, treated with the dyes in mind.

Moth treatment

Wool rugs can draw moths, most often in the dark under furniture.

Rug repair

Worn edges, holes and moth damage, mended before they grow.

Questions

Hand-made rug questions

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.

Is my rug Persian or Oriental?

Maybe both. A Persian rug is one kind of Oriental rug, made in Iran or the areas around it. “Oriental” is the wider name for hand-made rugs from many places, such as Turkey, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet and China. If you’re not sure, we’ll tell you what we see.

Can you tell if it’s hand-knotted?

Usually, yes. On a hand-knotted rug the pattern shows clearly on the back, and the fringe is part of the rug rather than sewn on. We check how every rug was made before we choose how to wash it. How to check yours.

Is a hand-made rug washed differently?

Yes. Every rug is checked first and washed the way its fibres need. With a hand-made rug we go more slowly and take extra care with the dyes and the fringe. If we see anything that worries us, such as dyes that might run, we talk to you before we start. Dye runs (colour that has already bled) aren’t covered by the stain promise.

Can you pick up my other rugs too?

Yes. Tell us how many rugs you have when you book, and we’ll plan the pickup around them. Each rug is checked on its own and washed the way it needs, so your Persian rug and your hallway runner each get the right care.

How much does it cost?

Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate. How pricing works.
