About synthetic rugs
Easy-care rugs for busy rooms
Durable, but not dirt-proof.
Synthetic fibres are a popular choice for carpet and rugs. They make up most carpet sales due to the variety and durability. They are cost-effective and easy to install in most buildings and outdoor areas. The material requires low maintenance, is stain-resistant and easy to clean. Most synthetic rugs are durable and resilient to mechanical stress caused by furniture or foot traffic.
Easy-care doesn’t mean no care, though. Dust, grit and oily soil still build up at the base of the pile, and the rug slowly turns grey and flat.
- Grey traffic paths
- Flattened pile
- Sticky or oily spots
- Pet smells

Know your fibres
Not all synthetics are the same
Each fibre has its own strengths and weak spots.
There are a number of materials that synthetic carpets can be made from. There are six common pile fibre materials, each with their own advantages. Knowing which one your rug is made of helps us clean it the right way.
- Nylon Nylon is a cost-efficient, durable carpet material. Its elastic material makes it resistant to mechanical stress. The fabric is susceptible to fading and bleaching due to its acidic dye.
- Polyester Polyester carpet material is stain-resistant. Its fibres don’t readily absorb water, and it is easy to clean. It is resistant to fading and bleeding of the material. Polyester carpets are ideal for entrances and if you have pets or kids. They are relatively easy to clean.
- Olefin Olefin, or polypropylene, is water-resistant. This quality also makes it stain-resistant. This makes it an ideal choice for outdoor areas such as pools and stadiums. Olefin is a strong material, and its light density allows it to float on water. It’s resistant to fading and is easy to clean. Olefin isn’t resistant to mechanical stress and will flatten. It is also heat-sensitive and will melt when exposed to high temperatures. This carpet material is great for temporary office locations.
- Acrylic Acrylic carpet material has a soft texture and is often brightly coloured. This carpet material is stain-resistant and dries efficiently. It’s resistant to fading from UV light and pests such as moths and moulds. Acrylic carpet is durable and resistant to mechanical stress. The breathable material allows the carpet to be cleaned fast and efficiently. The breathable material allows the carpet pile to dry quickly.

Outdoor & patio rugs
Outdoor rug cleaning
Outdoor rugs need a proper wash too.
Outdoor rugs are usually olefin, or polypropylene. They shrug off the rain, but they still collect sand, pollen, leaves and spills, and they can start to smell musty if they stay damp underneath.
A hose-down only reaches the surface. We wash outdoor rugs through at our facility and dry them properly, so they’re ready to store for the winter or to lay back down.

How we clean it
A full wash and a thorough rinse
The rinse matters as much as the wash.
Soap left behind in a rug acts like a magnet for new dirt. So we take as much care rinsing a synthetic rug as we do washing it.
- Check We look at the fibre, the backing and any stains, spots or worn areas.
- Wash A full wash that lifts the oily grime vacuuming leaves behind.
- Rinse A thorough rinse, so no soap is left to attract dirt.
- Dry Dried indoors without high heat, which some synthetics don’t like.
Extra care
Stains, odours and repairs
Some rugs need more than a wash. We price any extra work before we start.
Rug types
Other rugs we clean
Every rug is made differently. We check each one before we wash it.

Cotton & flat-weave
Light, flat rugs that show spills, washed with care for their colours.

Shag
Deep pile hides crumbs and dust. We wash it clean, and we’ll be upfront if long shag has grit packed too deep to get out.

Wool
Warm and hard-wearing. Wool holds dirt deep, so it gets a thorough wash.

Persian
Rich reds and blues, fine knots. Washed gently, fringe and all.
Not sure what your rug is? That’s fine. We check every rug before we clean it.
Questions
Synthetic rug questions
The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.
My rug is stain-resistant. Why does it need cleaning?
Stain-resistant fibres keep spills from sinking in quickly, but dust, grit and oily soil still build up at the base of the pile. As a rough guide, a synthetic rug in an everyday room does well with a professional wash about once a year.
How much does synthetic rug cleaning cost?
Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate.
Do you clean outdoor and patio rugs?
Yes. We pick them up, wash them through at our facility and dry them properly. The end of the season is a good time, so the rug goes into storage clean and dry.
Is viscose a synthetic?
Not quite. Viscose, also called rayon or art silk, is made from plant fibres and behaves very differently from nylon or polyester when it’s wet. Read more on our silk and viscose section.
My rug has a rubber or latex backing. Can you clean it?
It depends on the backing. Some backings get brittle with age and start to crumble. We check it first, and if a wash could damage it, we tell you before we start.
