About cotton rugs

Light, flat and easy to live with

The rug for kitchens, nurseries and busy hallways.

Cotton is most often used to make flat-weave rugs. Flat-woven rugs are not as thick and sometimes not as durable as hand-knotted rugs. It is important to regularly maintain your cotton rugs, as they do not hide stains as well as pile rugs. Your cotton flat-weave rug might be reversible; however, you will not be able to flip the rug and hide spills.

Cotton flat-weaves include dhurries, rag rugs and simple striped or patterned weaves. They’re light and easy to move from room to room.

Washing at home

Why not the washing machine?

Fine for a bath mat, risky for a real rug.

Some smaller cotton rugs might be machine washable; however, you should not attempt to wash larger rugs in a washing machine, as it might damage your washer and rug. We at Vivid Cleaning have the ability to clean any size area rug.

We use only mild soaps for rug cleaning. These cleaning products help ensure that even rugs that have been coloured with natural tea dyes do not get damaged.

How we clean it

Washed, rinsed and dried with care

Cotton rug cleaning with care.

Rugs have been made for thousands of years, and their cleaning method was perfected a long time ago. For this reason, handmade area rugs should not be cleaned with steam cleaning, dry cleaning or shampoo cleaning or any other modern carpet cleaning methods. These cleaning methods are designed to clean carpets and not area rugs.

  • Check Every rug is inspected first at our facility. We look at the cotton, the weave and the dyes.
  • Wash Cotton rugs are pressure washed with mild soap and water, which minimizes the risk of colour bleeding.
  • Rinse Afterwards, the rug is placed on an industrial wringer that first rinses the rug with clean water, and then it passes between 2 massive rollers, which squeeze out the water.
  • Dry The rug is then placed in an environmentally controlled room for drying. Once the rug is clean and dry, it is rolled up and ready for delivery.

Common problems

When a cotton rug needs a wash

Cotton shows everyday life quickly.

A cotton rug soaks up spills fast and shows grey traffic paths sooner than wool. Regular washing keeps it looking bright and stops marks from setting in.

  • Food and drink spills
  • Grey, dingy colours
  • Curled edges or corners
  • Pet accidents

Extra care

Stains, odours and repairs

Some rugs need more than a wash. We price any extra work before we start.

Stain treatment

Juice, coffee and food spills, treated as an extra step after the wash.

Other rugs we clean

Every rug is made differently. We check each one before we wash it.

Wool

Warm and hard-wearing. Wool holds dirt deep, so it gets a thorough wash.

Shag

Deep pile hides crumbs and dust. We wash it clean, and we’ll be upfront if long shag has grit packed too deep to get out.

Not sure what your rug is? That’s fine. We check every rug before we clean it.

Questions

Cotton rug questions

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.

Can I wash my cotton rug in the washing machine?

A small rug might be fine if its label says it’s machine washable. Please don’t put a large rug in a home washer: the weight of a wet rug can damage the machine, and the rug can shrink or lose its shape.

How much does cotton rug cleaning cost?

Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate.

Will the colours run?

We inspect each rug at our facility and choose a gentle wash to lower the risk. Some hand-dyed or tea-dyed rugs can still be a risk. If we think the colours might run, we tell you before we go ahead. Sometimes there’s no way to know in advance, for example with a damaged rug, so bring up any concern about the dyes when we collect it. Dye runs (colour that has already bled) aren’t covered by the stain promise.

Do you clean very large cotton rugs?

Yes. Just tell us roughly how big it is when you book.

Do you clean kilims and other flat-weaves?

Yes. Wool kilims are covered on our kilim and flat-weave section, and cotton dhurries and rag rugs are cleaned the way this page describes.
