How we clean rugs

From your floor to our facility, and back

Here is what happens to your rug.

Why we wash rugs at our facility

A rug needs more than a surface clean.

Sand, dust and grit work their way down through the pile and settle at the base of a rug.

That’s why we take your rug away, wash it through at our facility and dry it fully before it comes home.

Need wall-to-wall carpet cleaned in your home? That’s a separate service: in-home carpet cleaning.

A close look first

Every rug is checked before we wash it

We look before we decide anything.

We look at what your rug is made of, how it was made and its dyes.

  • Fibres and weave
  • Dyes and colours
  • Stains and odours
  • Fringe and edges

If something needs extra care, we tell you plainly before we start. If you decide not to go ahead after the inspection, we bring your rug back at no charge.

Washing

Washed the way its fibres need

Wool, silk, cotton and synthetics each need something different.

Vivid Cleaning knows all rugs have unique requirements for cleaning.

  • Wool In a wool area rug, thick material traps dirt deep down at the base of the rug. Hair and fur also tend to get trapped in the wool fibres. Wool area rugs require professional off-site rug cleaning in order to remove the dirt and dust properly.
  • Silk Silk is a soft natural material that requires unique, careful attention when it is being cleaned. The silk rug pile is delicate and needs special cleaning in order to prevent fading and potential warping.
  • Cotton A careful wash for flat-weaves and their colours.
  • Synthetic Dust and dirt will build up in synthetic rugs, and they require cleaning by professional rug cleaners about once a year. Professional rug washing will remove the dirt that has settled at the base of your synthetic area rug.

Drying and finishing

Dried with care, fringe and all

The last steps matter as much as the wash.

We take the water out and let your rug dry indoors, without high heat, all the way through, so it keeps its shape. We wash the fringe too, so it doesn’t stay grey beside a clean rug. The fringe also gets extra treatment after drying.

Once it’s dry, we bring it home to you.

Two rugs we’re often asked about

Shag and hand‑knotted rugs

Both need a careful wash.

Shag rugs

Shag rug cleaning

Soft, deep pile that hides more than you’d think.

Long shag pile is lovely underfoot, but it holds on to crumbs, hair, dust and grit.

We wash shag rugs clean and make sure they’re dry all the way through before they come home.

With long shag, some grit sits so deep in the pile that removing every bit of it would cost more than replacing the rug. We’ll be upfront about that before we start.

Hand-knotted rugs

Fine hand-made rug cleaning

Fine weaves that need a gentle hand.

Persian rugs require special care to maintain their rich colour palettes of deep reds and navy blues. Our area rug cleaning method will clean your rugs, and it will preserve their beautiful patterns and workmanship.

We clean all types of oriental area rugs from Persian, Chinese, Tibetan, Iranian and Russian weavers. Oriental area rugs often use wool pile and need professional rug cleaning to thoroughly remove dust and dirt.

Our trained technicians are able to repair and even fully restore your area rugs. Whether you need minor repairs on your rug or you want to have it completely restored, we repair all types of rugs, hand- and machine-made, and fully restore hand-made rugs. Reweaving, moth repair and full restoration take long, careful work, with colours and fibres matched by hand, so they’re usually done on valuable rugs, antiques and works of art. Extra care

Stains, odours and repairs

A regular rug wash may not be able to take care of all your rug problems. We offer a variety of specialty rug cleaning services like pet urine removal, enzyme odour treatment, sanitizing, moth treatment and rug dusting (for some rugs).

Stain treatment

Wine, coffee, food and other spills, treated as an extra step after the wash.

Pet urine & accidents

Pet urine stains can ruin the look of your rug, especially once they soak down into the pile.

Rug repair

Fringe, edges, holes and moth damage. Every repair starts with a full wash.

Allergies? If allergies are a concern, we recommend our enzyme odour treatment with a super wash, for the most thorough clean we can give. A super wash means your rug is washed from both sides.

Rug dusting (for some rugs). Some rugs can also be dusted before they’re washed. The rug goes into a large, slowly turning drum with holes in it. As it tumbles back and forth, grit, sand and dust packed at the base of the pile shake loose, and a strong vacuum pulls them away before any water touches the rug.

Questions

Rug cleaning questions

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.

How much does rug cleaning cost?

Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain and enzyme odour treatment cost extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate. How pricing works.

Do you clean rugs in my home?

No. Area rugs are cleaned at our facility, where they can be washed right through and dried properly. Wall-to-wall carpet is a separate, in-home service.

Which areas do you pick up from?

Toronto, including North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough, plus Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Thornhill and Markham.

Do I need to move the furniture or be home for the pickup?

At pickup, we move the furniture off the rug. You don’t need to be home, though: you can leave the rug out for us. Please note that we’re not responsible for the rug until we pick it up.

How long will my rug be away?

Regular cleaning usually takes about a week. Enzyme odour treatment can add another week, and stain treatment adds 1 to 3 weeks on average, sometimes more for stubborn stains.

Can you get every stain out?

When nobody has tried cleaning it first, virtually all stains come out completely. See our stain promise*. Dye runs (colour that has already bled) aren’t covered by the stain promise.

Roughly how often does a rug need cleaning?

As a rough guide, a rug in an everyday room should be washed about once a year.
