About Persian rugs
What makes a Persian rug special
Flowers, vines and colour, tied by hand.
Most Persian rugs originate from Iran and the surrounding areas. These rugs feature artistic design of nature and floral patterns. This brings beauty and elegance to the room they are placed in.
The curvilinear patterns and rug symmetry make them great for bringing the room together. Oriental rugs also help arrange furniture pieces tastefully.
- Hand-knotted pile
- Wool, sometimes silk
- Rich, deep dyes
- Fringe at each end

Hand-knotted rugs
Made by hand, knot by knot
How to tell, and why it matters for cleaning.
A hand-knotted rug is tied one knot at a time onto threads that run the length of the rug. Turn a corner over: if the pattern shows clearly on the back, and the fringe is the ends of those long threads, it’s likely hand-knotted.
Hand-made rugs can last for generations, but they don’t like rough treatment. Hard scrubbing, strong chemicals and too much heat can harm the wool and the dyes. That’s why we choose a gentle wash for them.
Not sure how your rug was made? We’ll tell you what we see when we pick it up.

How we clean it
Washed gently, colours first
Rug cleaning and rich colours.
Persian rugs require careful rug cleaning because of their rich colours. These rugs frequently use deep reds and navy blues. Golden colours are used to make the rug patterns. Our professional rug cleaning services help ensure that your Persian rugs won’t bleed or fade.
At Vivid Cleaning we ensure that your entire rug will get cleaned. This means that we even take care to wash the rug fringes. This detail of the rug should never be neglected when it comes to cleaning. If your rug hasn’t had its fringes cleaned, over time it will start to show and contrast with the rest of the rug.
- Check We look closely at the fibres, the dyes, the fringe and any worn spots.
- Wash A gentle wash at our facility that reaches the dirt deep in the pile, chosen to suit the dyes.
- Dry Dried indoors without high heat, evenly and all the way through, so the rug keeps its shape.
- Fringe Washed with the rest of the rug, every time. It also gets extra treatment after drying.
If we think your dyes could run, we tell you before we start.

Antique & heirloom rugs
Older rugs, at a slower pace
For the rug that has been in the family for years.
An antique or heirloom rug often carries more than its pattern. It may have been passed down, brought from far away or bought for a first home.
Older rugs can have thin spots, dry fibres or weak edges. We look at them closely, take our time and wash them gently. If we think a wash could do more harm than good, we tell you plainly.
Worn edges or loose fringe? We repair them after the wash, in the same pickup.

Signs it’s time
When your Persian rug needs a wash
Small signs that add up.
Dirt in a Persian rug isn’t always easy to see. The colours slowly turn dull, and the fringe turns grey.
- Dull or faded colours
- Grey or tangled fringe
- Grit when you fold a corner
- Spills or pet accidents
Extra care
Stains, moths and repairs
Some rugs need more than a wash. We price any extra work before we start.

Questions
Persian rug questions
The questions we hear most, answered plainly. For anything else, just call us.
Will the colours run when you wash my Persian rug?
We inspect your rug at our facility before we wash it and choose a gentle method to suit it. Some older or poorly set dyes can still be a risk. If we think the colours might run, we talk to you before we go ahead. We can’t always tell ahead of time, especially with a damaged rug. If you have doubts about the dyes, just tell our crew at pickup. Dye runs (colour that has already bled) aren’t covered by the stain promise.
How much does Persian rug cleaning cost?
Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extra, and only if your rug needs them. You’ll see the full price before we start, and pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions, and we’ll reply with an estimate.
Do you clean the fringe too?
Yes. The fringe is washed with the rest of the rug, and it also gets extra treatment after drying. If it’s loose or worn, we can also repair the fringe.
My rug is very old. Can you still clean it?
Often, yes. We check older rugs for thin spots and weak edges first, and wash them at a slower pace. If we think a wash could harm your rug, we explain what could happen before we start, and you decide whether we go ahead.
Can you tell me what my rug is worth?
No. We can tell you what your rug seems to be made of and how it was made, which helps us choose how to clean it.
How do I look after it between cleanings?
Vacuum it regularly, going gently over the fringe. Turn the rug around once in a while so it wears evenly, and blot spills right away with a clean white cloth instead of rubbing.
