Your carpet needs care and protective measures so you can enjoy it. Scotchgarding your carpet is one of the ways to protect your carpet. This guards against liquid spills and prevents stains from happening to your carpet. For this article, we used Scotchgard Carpet and Rug protector. This is available at most department stores.

You will need a can of Scotchgard, newspaper and rubber gloves. It’s suggested that you apply Scotchgard after your carpet has been professionally cleaned. This way, you are not locking in dirt by accident into the carpet fibres. If you can’t get it professionally cleaned, carefully vacuum it to remove dirt and stray fibres.

Place newspaper near the edges of the carpet to prevent the carpet protector from getting everywhere. Shake the can and spray the foam 60 cm from the carpet. Apply a thin layer. Rub in the foam so that the carpet fibres soak it up. Allow it to dry. Apply another layer of carpet protector if desired.

It’s important to note that Scotchgard is only a preventative method. It’s not foolproof, and you can still end up with some spills. The carpet protector essentially prevents the spill from soaking into the carpet fibres. It also makes the carpet easier to clean.
